Ralph Mathieu interview

We’re right at the halfway mark of our Seed&Spark crowdfunding campaign, and we’re at 44% funded, thanks to all of you beautiful people. We have 15 days to raise about $5,400 in order to get the green light. It’s basically all or nothing, folks. If we don’t hit 80% of goal by the end of this campaign, we get none of the pledged funds.

We also still need a LOT of followers to get us qualified as a finalist in the Hometown Heroes rally. (We’ll still get our funding if we hit our 80% financial goal.) So, what we’re saying is, now’s a great time to MAKE A PLEDGE or FOLLOW on our campaign page if you haven’t yet, and an even better time to make #parkwayofbrokendreams go viral on Twitter or whatever.

In other news, we actually spent time this week actually doing something other than fundraising…like shooting and promoting this movie!

We hung out for a few hours with artist Anthony Bondi, whose credentials need no heralding, and not only did he wax Bondi-like through his history with the Maryland Parkway art scene (did you know his first art show was at the Underground record store?), but also shared a ton of helpful archival footage and images with us.

We also visited with Ralph Mathieu, whose comic book haven Alternate Reality Comics has been located near UNLV for 25 years. He has a unique perspective as a small business owner who’s experienced the shifting landscape of the University District over that span of time.

And we spent a little time talking to Harry Fagel, well-known as Las Vegas’ own “Cop Poet,” but also as someone who saw both sides of the Maryland Parkway scene back in the day: The center of an amazingly special cultural movement, but also a place that was not much less gritty and crime-prone than it is today.

OH! And we also found time to chat with the fine folks at Happy Earth Market for their HEMPodcast. They’re helping build a new cultural community in the New Orleans Square section of Commercial Center off Maryland Parkway and Karen Avenue. We talked about all of the things, if you want to listen.

What’s next? More fundraising. More filming. More press. We ain’t stopping until this train reaches its destination. Thanks for riding with us.
